I have already discussed this problem with several moderators, and the admins should also be aware of it. However, I feel that my ideas should be taken more seriously.
As the user XxdrunkotterxX, I have personally experienced how often people have been catfished by a bot using my profile picture. I also know from other users that some of them are afraid to show their faces because their pictures have been stolen as well.
After learning from a moderator that, even after receiving a 30-day ban, these people can still remain active on other accounts, I believe this shows an urgent need for additional measures.
My first suggestion was to have a moderator who specializes specifically in reviewing users' profile pictures and helping determine their authenticity. I was told that there are already not enough moderators available. However, my response to this is that, at least initially, it would be enough to have just one moderator responsible for this task. In the future, moderators could also have more specialized roles instead of having most of them focused on the same task maintaining order in the chat and responding to written messages. This could simply become another category of moderation.
My second suggestion was for TC to introduce a system that prevents other users from taking screenshots of profile pictures. This could help protect users' privacy and safety. WhatsApp, for example, has implemented similar privacy features.
Of course, these changes would not guarantee that there would no longer be any bots or catfishing. However, they could reduce the risk and allow more TC users to enjoy the platform without constantly worrying about their pictures being stolen.
The focus should not necessarily be on identifying whether someone has stolen a picture from Pinterest or Google, as that is somewhat secondary. The more important issue is determining whether a picture belongs to another TC user and protecting users from having their images stolen and used within the platform. We should first focus on the most important issues and build solutions that can provide long-term benefits rather than investing years into less urgent problems.
My final suggestion was to introduce an optional verification system where users can verify that their profile picture actually belongs to them. This could work by requiring the user to submit three pictures while performing specific gestures or poses. A moderator could then review the pictures and confirm that the person matches their profile picture.
Once verified, the profile could display something such as “Profile picture verified”, along with a visible verification check mark similar to the ones we know from platforms like TikTok.
There could also be different levels of verification, for example:
Email verified: We know that the email address has been verified, but this does not necessarily confirm that the person behind the account is genuine.
Email and profile picture verified: The user's profile picture has been confirmed to belong to the person using the account.
These are all suggestions and ideas that I have taken from other chat platforms where similar features have proven to be helpful. I sincerely hope that something like this can eventually be implemented, as I believe it could make TC a safer and more enjoyable platform for many users.
